A role for ciliary neurotrophic factor as an inducer of reactive gliosis, the glial response to central nervous system injury.

چکیده
Within the central nervous system (CNS) ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is expressed by astrocytes where it remains stored as an intracellular protein; its release and function as an extracellular ligand are thought to occur in the event of cellular injury. We find that overexpression of CNTF in transgenic mice recapitulates the glial response to CNS lesion, as does its injection into the uninjured brain. These results demonstrate that CNTF functions as an inducer of reactive gliosis, a condition associated with a number of neurological diseases of the CNS.

Inflammation is portion of the body's immune response and it is basically a host protective response to tissue ischemia, injury, autoimmune responses or infectious agents. Although the information presented so far points to a detrimental role for inflammation in central nervous system (CNS) disease, it may also be useful. CNS demonstrates characteristic of inflammation, and in response to damag...

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a syndrome causing from a severe traumatic happening that leads to threatened death or injury. PTSD is associated with changes in limbic, hippocampal, and prefrontal cortical region function due to changes in synaptogenesis, dendritic modifying, and neurogenesis. Changes in neuron in PTSD patients result from pathophysiological disturbances in inflammato...
متن کاملP113: Inflammation and its Role in Neurological Diseases with an Emphasis on MS
Inflammation is an important factor in the pathophysiology of neurological diseases and the physiological response of the immune system against internal and external harmful stimuli. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to damage, which leads to the removal of debris from dead cells and infections from damage and tissue repair. In this study, neuropathic inflammation and its role in...
متن کاملCiliary Neurotrophic Factor Induces Genes Associated with Inflammation and Gliosis in the Retina: A Gene Profiling Study of Flow-Sorted, Müller Cells
BACKGROUND Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), a member of the interleukin-6 cytokine family, has been implicated in the development, differentiation and survival of retinal neurons. The mechanisms of CNTF action as well as its cellular targets in the retina are poorly understood. It has been postulated that some of the biological effects of CNTF are mediated through its action via retinal glia...
متن کاملMeteorin is upregulated in reactive astrocytes and functions as a negative feedback effector in reactive gliosis
Reactive gliosis is a glial response to a wide range of central nervous system insults, which results in cellular and molecular changes to resting glial cells. Despite its fundamental effect on neuropathologies, the identification and characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain to be fully elucidated. The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression pro...
